About This Item

Francestown: Typographeum, 1997. Limited private press edition. First edition. Hardcover. Fine copy. 8vo. Brown cloth with printed label on back-strip (spare label tipped in). 48 pp. 115 copies hand-set, printed letterpress and bound by R. T. Risk. Issued without a dust-jacket. Included here is an essay about what it may have been like to be a printer in the 15th Century. It describes how a printing shop was run and what problems had to be dealt with. Two more essays are about Nicolaus Jenson and Aldus Manutius, printers who worked at Venice during the same period. Then there is a chapter of autobiography, about the author's first years in Francestown. And finally there is a reminiscence of David Low, a bookseller and friend.
