Prague: Volné vydání spolku českých bibliofilů (Society of Czech Bibliophiles), 1911. Octavo (19.5 × 13 cm). Original full brown pigskin binding by Ludvík Bradáč, embossed to spine, with marbled endpapers; in the original card slipcase; 350, [5] pp. With 160 reproductions of typographic designs. Signed by the author below the preface. Case lightly soiled and rubbed, with ink annotation by the first owner; very good. First edition of this monumental and hightly influential monograph on typographic design by the designer and editor Karel Dyrynk (1876-1949), perhaps the most important Czech typographer and book artist of his time. Dubbed a "Czech book artist luminary", Dyrynk published a number of books on typographic design and lettering, and was the editor of and contributor to the trade journal "Typografia" from 1905 to 1914. Between 1919 and 1934, he was the Technical Director of the State Printing Works in Prague, where he assisted in the printing the first Czech scriptures. In 1908 he was also one of the founding members of The Society of Czech Bibliophiles. His meditations on contemporary Czech book design and its aesthetic dimension are amply illustrated. One of 110 copies, hand-bound by the master bookbinder and editor Ludvík Bradáč (1885-1947), who played a key role in perfecting the Czech bookbinding craft and collaborated with many leading designers, such as V. H. Brunner, F. Kobliha, and Fr. Kysela. Sáňka 198. Outside the Czech Republic, KVK and OCLC show only the copies at Michigan and Illinois.
