New York: January 6th, 1931., 1931.. Very good. - Three-line letter typed on an approximately 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead with his name & address printed at the top. Signed "Joseph P. Day", with an autograph postscript signed with his initials. The top corners are slightly creased & there is a tiny piece out of each bottom corner. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.

Day sends to Seymour Halpern, then a young autograph collector, items for his collection[neither of these items is here present]. He pens a P.S and signs it with his initials; "I hope you write a good story. Good luck to you / JPD",

Joseph P. Day [1874-1944] was a real estate broker and pioneer auctioneer active in New York City from the 1890s until his death. He auctioned land on Brooklyn's Manhattan Beach as early as 1904. In 1907 he sold 2,000 lots in New York City in six auctions, one of the most successful lot sales ever held in New York City. He announced plans to build 114 homes and many amenities at Manhattan Beach in 1916. This project was completed in the 1920s and was featured on the cover of Life magazine as "Life Goes to a Party at Joseph Day's Manhattan Beach Baths". It was billed as the "World's Largest Privately Owned Playground". In the course of his career Day sold about one-third of the Bronx and one-third of Queens.

The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.
