Eugene Ware (1841-1911) joined the Union army to fight in the Civil War at the age of 19. He later studied law and set up a practice in Topeka, Kansas. He was appointed a Commissioner in the Bureau of Pensions by President Theodore Roosevelt. He was best known, however, as a poet, writing under the pseudonym "Ironquill". His most successful book was "The Rhymes of Ironquill" which went through numerous editions.
A recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the American impresario and producer Major James B. Pond (1838-1903) organized and scheduled lecture tours for eminent authors and personalities of the period. His friends and clients included Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle and the explorer Henry Stanley, among countless others.
