by Shaw, George Bernard
- Used
London, 1938. One page, on quarto sheet of letterhead. Ca. 125 words. Folded for mailing, two hole punch in left margin, trace of foxing, very good. Shaw writes to the Polish-born historian and journalist, then resident in Switzerland: "In journalism there is no such thing as an English gentleman. In the present rush of exciting foreign news every item is stale in two days. Pre-Anschluss news is already as hopelessly out of date as pre-war news. A fortnight ago I gave an important interview on the Russian trials. It was refused on the ground that the trials were quite forgotten. I will have to wait until somebody else is shot ...." In evident response to Ludwig's comments about another journalist, Shaw notes: "It is very annoying; but it cannot be helped until the papers have recovered from the shock of the Anschluss, though anybody might have known it was coming. Mr. White is totally forgotten whilst you still hold the field ...." Shaw closes by extending his warmest regards to "Frau Ludwig and yourself. Faithfully G. Bernard Shaw."

Rust stains to the top three documents and the lower document from the metal caps on the binding string, not affecting the Lovell letters. Occasional mild creasing, otherwise the contents fresh and in excellent condition. An interesting archive of unpublished correspondence between leading radio astronomer Alfred Lovell (1913-2012) and astronomer and science populariser Arthur Beer. Stuttgart, Germany: Edition Dornberger, 1971. Original folded silkscreen Christmas card . Dated, inscribed, and signed by famed American artist Robert Indiana: "25-XII-'73. Agnes. Greetings. So nice to receive your note--the "Art" sculpture is at Colby for '75 Inaugural (on loan). Bob." Indiana created Christmas cards that he sent to his personal friends, and Agnes almost certainly was the important Canadian-American artist Agnes Martin. I have not yet determined which sculpture is referenced in the note. The silkscreen is in near-fine condtion: clean and bright, with a hint of wear along the folding edge; the fold is slightly askew revealing a bit of the white margin of the note.. SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Near Fine. Illus. by Robert Indiana. 5 7/8 Inches X 5 7/8 Inches. Fine Art Print.

1731 Letters of Turkish SPY by Marana Ottoman Letters Byzantine Political 6v SETMost known for his work 'Letters Writ by A Turkish Spy', Giovanni Paolo Marana was a political refugee during the reign of Louis XIV in France. The first volume, however, is the only volume he is known to have written. The subsequent seven volumes are attributed to various authors, even though some experts claim that Marana himself may have written them.
'Letters' is a collection of hundreds of fictional letters by an Ottoman spy named Mahmut, who also happened to be in the court of Louis XIV. The correspondence in this work covers the mid-17th-century in France are a satirical view of the current state of politics and society in Paris – making slights at figures such as Cardinal Richelieu.
