Washington, DC: November 22, 1957., 1957.. Very good. - Letter filling one side of an approximately 11-inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of Archives of Criminal Psychodynamics letterhead with Menninger's name listed as a member of the Editorial Board. Signed "Best wishes / Karl". There are three tiny brown marks at top left. The bottom edge of the letter is slightly darkened with its left corner lightly creased. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. <p>Menninger writes to Freudian psychiatrist and expert in criminology Dr. Arthur Foxe about a guest editorial Foxe is to contribute to an issue of Archives of Criminal Psychodynamics on crime and psychiatry. Foxe is also to help round up other psychiatrists to contribute to the issue. Menninger complains about the dearth of psychiatrists who know anything about crime: "We need cases, cases, criminal cases. Wertham, who never analyzed a single case of murder wrote a book about murder. He does not know anything but he just writes. We can't expect much from men like that, but we do expect help from one like you. So please get busy and write the editorial, also a case study...."<p>Karl Menninger [1893-1990] was born in Topeka, Kansas where, in 1919, he founded the Menninger Clinic with his father and later the Menninger Sanitarium. The Menninger Foundation was established in 1941. After World War II Menninger was instrumental in founding the Winter Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka which became the largest psychiatric training center in the world. The Menninger School of Psychiatry, which he founded in 1946, was renamed in his honor the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and Mental Health Science.
