About This Item

Chicago: Lakeside Press, 1930. A fine copy.. Large octavo, colour illustrations; original gilt-decorated cloth.

Dana, a Harvard man, spent two years voyaging by sea between 1834 and 1836, visiting many ports in the Americas. His work is vivid and important, particularly regarding California and rounding Cape Horn (the latter passage was enthusiastically admired by Melville). His experiences made him an advocate for the common sailor and, later, for the oppressed, as he became a prominent anti-slavery activist.

A contemporary bestseller, this edition was printed by the famous Lakeside Press in Chicago, under the supervision of William A. Ketteridge, and limited to 1,000 copies.
