USGS, Wash. D. C., 1896, 1896. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Quarto cloth. In Three Parts, these two volumes comprise Part III. Quarto cloth with gilt stamping. 1,058 pages total. Charts, Tables, etc.. Part III is "Mineral Resources of the United States, 1895 Metallic Products and Coal" (the second volume has the same subtitle, "Except Coal". The second volume has four leaves with the bottom edges torn up about 3", but these have been archivally repaired. Nevertheless, they are creased & somewhat unsightly on the bottom margins. The lower spine of the first volume is rubbed, and a 3/4" x 1" strip of the cloth on the back cover was torn & is reglued. There is a wealth of information in these two volumes.

Professionally framed and matted chromolithograph map revealing efforts by the US to better understand it's possesions, including the District of Alaska. ("Territory of Alaska" was used from 1912 until 1959 statehood.) Exposed area of map measures 16 1/4" x 19", actual measurement 45cm x 38cm. Topography by T.G. Gerdine, R.B. Oliver, and W.R. Hill. Control by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. At top margin "Surveyed in 1904" and "Datum is mean sea level." A handsome color map showing Nome and, in the lower third of the map, the Alaska coastline along the Bering Sea. Geologist in charge of the production of this map was Alfred H. Brooks. The importance of this map is the 1906 -- the height of the Nome Gold Rush, which differed from other northern gold rushes by the ease with which gold could be obtained from the beach sand at the shown landing place.
