About This Item

Washington DC: US Geological Survey, 1906. First Thus. Framed under glass. Fine. Professionally framed and matted chromolithograph map revealing efforts by the US to better understand it's possesions, including the District of Alaska. ("Territory of Alaska" was used from 1912 until 1959 statehood.) Exposed area of map measures 16 1/4" x 19", actual measurement 45cm x 38cm. Topography by T.G. Gerdine, R.B. Oliver, and W.R. Hill. Control by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. At top margin "Surveyed in 1904" and "Datum is mean sea level." A handsome color map showing Nome and, in the lower third of the map, the Alaska coastline along the Bering Sea. Geologist in charge of the production of this map was Alfred H. Brooks. The importance of this map is the 1906 -- the height of the Nome Gold Rush, which differed from other northern gold rushes by the ease with which gold could be obtained from the beach sand at the shown landing place. Gold could be recovered without requiring a claim. A striking production that conveys the beautiful austerity of the North. Map can be shipped in framed state or removed from frame and sent, rolled, in a tube. Shipping costs to be established, with no surcharge for handling -- only actual shipping costs charged.
