About This Item

Privately Published, Westminster, MD, 1962. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition. Book Signed by Author. A history of a historic Brethren church in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, that includes valuable genealogical information for the families who were members. Warmly inscribed by the author on the front free end paper: "To my good friend [name] I send this book. We hope that you will find many enjoyable hours in reading its pages." Signed and dated "Monrovia, Md. | Nov. 8, 1965." The author was the pastor of the Brothersvalley church from 1947-1955. The author goes beyond published and archival materials to provide details from the often difficult to access family-held documents loaned to him by descendants of the early settlers of the area. He writes in his preface: "The thousands of names recorded here are clues to the origin of many early families and we have tried to record these sources so that those of you who are searching for your family records may be able to follow back along the lines of origin until you have a more complete listing of names in your family tree" (p. xiii). Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 448 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block printed on coated stock is tight, bright and unmarked. There is some light foxing on the verso of the front free end paper and facing title page. Hardbound in a reddish-brown cloth over boards with the title in bright gilt on the front cover and faded gilt on the spine. The top corners are turned in; the bottom corners are sharper. Some wear at the tips and head and foot of the spine. A previous owner has written his name and a shelf number in pen (with the number corrected in pencil) at the top corner of the free front end paper. Top page edges are foxed, the side page edges less soon and the rear page edges are clean. Quantity Available: 1.
