New York: Burt, 1932. Reissue. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover in sky blue cloth lettered in black. Early reprint, still carrying only the 1932 copyright date. INSCRIBED ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: 'To Mrs. ______ _______/ A splendid personality, with much respect. Lewis E. Lawes/ June 10, 1937". 412 pp. Illustrated with photohgraphs Very good, spine sunned, shallow wear at spine exrtremities and a small scuff front cover; vintage bookplate front pastedown. No jacket. The memoirs of the warden of New York State's Sing Sing prison; Lawes served as warden from 1920 to 1941. He was an advocate of modern rehabilitaion efforts and worked to educate the public about the realities of prison life. The book was the basis of the 1932 film starring Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis and directed by Michael Curtiz.
