Boston: The Cornhill Company, 1918. 12mo. 143 pp. Red boards with gilt lettering to the spine and front board. Very good or better with light foxing to the endpapers and some rubbed spots to the rear board. Tight and square. William J. Edwards (1869-1950) was the founder of Snow Hill Institute and served as its principal from 1893 until 1924. Twenty-Five-Years in the Black Belt is a memoir, written when the school was 25 years old. It not only provided a fascinating portrait of the conditions of black people and the state of race relations in Alabama at the time, but also tells of one's person's determination to uplift his race, particularly through education. Scarce.

Boston, MA: The Cornhill Company, 1918. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, maroon cloth boards with gilt text on front and spine. Gilt is bright and cloth shows only minor spotting from handling. Corners are very lightly bumped and there is also a bump present on the front board, top edge, just above the "EN" in the word " Twenty". The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. Both pastedowns and opposite end pages show spotting and foxing but the text pages appear unaffected by this. This book came from the collection of Miss Sallie E. Robinson, who was a very prominent African-American from the Philadelphia area, and her signature and date appears on the front end page as well as the rear pastedown. No other markings noted.

Near Fine with subtle dust-soiling, very tiny gouge to top edge of a few pages, contents bright. An autobiography by the founder of the Snow Hill Normal School and Industrial Institute in Snow Hill, Alabama, which grew from a single log cabin to a campus of 27 buildings and over 400 students.
