Massively heavy, oversized volume, stated Second Edition of this useful compendium that I use frequently. xx, 1094 pp., bound in an oversized Imperial octavo hardcover format. Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear, bright interior, unmarked. Bound simply in bright red cloth, with gilt lettering to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn, protected by a plastic coat. Fine reference guide to the works of more than 600 crime and mystery writers of the 20th century, with plentiful revised entries and rewritten essays from the First Edition. Complete with Preface by the Editor, a list of suggested bibliographic resources, Editor's note, a list of contributors, and then hundreds of bio-bibliographical entries. American and British writers in this genre are assembled here and with a complete list of the writer's works to 1984, including uncollected short stories. Appendixes, too, and major reference to their 19th-century predescessors, including Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Sheridan Le Fanu, and Mrs. Henry Wood. Plentiful continental European writers are mentioned, too, especially French ones. Most helpfully, there is a full title index.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
