Published by Clover Hill Editions, London in 1977. Number 'XXX1' of only 80 special copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked 'Clover Hill' (made for Douglas Cleverdon in 1936). The BOOK is in Fine condition, bound in quarter-morocco and marbled boards. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most significant work. These engravings were initially printed in the Golden Cockerel edition in 1927. Jones, however, felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. Number 265 of only 275 copies published on Batchelor hand-made paper with Golden Cockerel watermark, wood engraved title, borders plus 29 wood-engravings by Eric Ravilious printed in brown and grey/green. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Top edge gilt. A tiny area of light wear to the upper front cover edge and light rubbing to the lower edges otherwise the decorated cloth boards are in very good condition. Internally clean, with no inscriptions, erasures or bookplates. The leather spine and corners are in very nice condition. The gilt titling to the spine remains very bright. Loosely inserted are the 'Golden Cockerel Press' flyers for 1931 (with one full page illustration), 1932 and the catalogue for 1938 which all detail this publication. With frontis and fourteen mask images, each are titled and initialed by the artist in pencil printed silk screen and letter-press in 24 pt Plantin. Number 65' of an edition of only 125 signed copies. The 15 proofs (50 x 37cm) were issued as 15 unbound, four page sections on Barcham Green rag-made housed within a paper wraparound folder. The whole housed within a blue cloth folder with silver titling and the original publisher s canvas slip-case. (There were also separate editions of 50 plus 5 proofs made of all the images except Friar & Franklin ). All the screen-prints are present and in excellent condition. It bears a fine calligraphic inscription : 'Very many happy returns Douglas from your friends within. January 17th 1983'. Number '383' of 500 copies issued on Arnold's hand-made paper with the Golden Cockerel Press watermark, of which one hundred copies were specially bound in vellum at Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. The vellum spine with gilt titling has a few lights spots. The cloth boards with gilt decoration are clean. The binding is tight. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions. Some light sporadic toning to the page edges in places, more so to pages 12-15, 90-91 and 132-133, and the rest mild - all copies appear to have been affected with this to some degree, and it does not particularly detract.
