Russell Sage Foundation Publications, New York, 1977. Reprint. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Introduction by authors, notes and index. Dark cream-coloured end pages. Red coloured cloth covered boards with black coloured titles to the backstrip. In January 1972 the Surgeon General's Report on television violence and its effect on child viewers was tabled, after a three-year enquiry and a cost of over $1.8 million. To say that it's reception was problematic and rocky is an understatement. It caused anger and confusion with a number of critics; politicians, the broadcast industry itself; and many of the social scientists who had helped carry out the research not to mention, the public. The final consequences of the Report was not played out for many years. The authors also consider the government's effectiveness, or not, when dealing with social objectives; and the influence of citizen action on the communication systems.
