About This Item

London: Faber & Faber, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover in red cloth with gilt stamped lettering to spine, 156 pp. 12mo. In dust jacket. Very Good, frayed and rubbed to head of spine and rear board, otherwise lightly soiled, foxed. Binding sound./Very Good jacket, edgeworn including shallow chipping, some soiling, unclipped and clean otherwise.. Early novel from the revered and prolific Guyanese author, who has somehow remained out of print in the United States. This copy inscribed to Anna Rutherford, who organized the first European conference on the British Commonwealth novel and spent her career promoting and publishing indigenous writers under European colonial rule, including work by Wilson Harris (Commonwealth, 1971). Her journal Kunapipi was regarded as the premier post-colonial literary journal in Europe.

Harris' inscription in blue ink to title page reads as such: "For Anna / with kindest wishes and affection / Wilson / Aarhus April 1973". It was likely that Harris was staying with Rutherford at her home in Aarhus, Denmark, as she was well-known for opening it to all visiting writers.
