The story goes that in the time of King John, the then Baron of Kendal rewarded Richard de Gilpin, also known as Richard the Rider for his bravery in killing the Wild Boar of Westmoreland that had been terrorising local villages. He was rewarded with land in and around Kentmere (Lake District). From this time on the Gilpin s crest included a sable boar on a gold background.
