London : Printed for B. Law and Son, W. Otridge, R. Baldwin, and F. and C. Rivington, MDCCXCIII. [1793] .. A very good original tree calf binding. 8vo. [40pp.]/pp.352 . 8.5" x 5.5" x 1.0". Polished tree calf boards. Corners carefully strengthened. Smooth spine with gilt banding and red leather title label. The gilt compartments have an image of a peacock into each compartment. Book plate to verso of the front board: "George Gilpin."; with motto: "Dictis Factisque Simplex" ("Simple in word and deed") . Second armorial bookplate to front endpaper; "Alfred Lucas"; with motto: "Respice Finem" ("Look to the end"). Clean text throughout. VG. ** The bookplate of George Gilpin, shows a wild boar. The story goes that in the time of King John, the then Baron of Kendal rewarded Richard de Gilpin, also known as Richard the Rider for his bravery in killing the Wild Boar of Westmoreland that had been terrorising local villages. He was rewarded with land in and around Kentmere (Lake District). From this time on the Gilpin s crest included a sable boar on a gold background. Gilpin's ancestors resided in Kentmere Hall, Westmorland (Cumbria). *** Referenced by ESTC T100922. **** "Jean Le Clerc, also Johannes Clericus (March 19, 1657 � January 8, 1736), was a Genevan theologian and biblical scholar.
