Bright first edition, first impression of Nevil Shute's last novel, enclosed in its unclipped dust wrapper. Shute's final novel published posthumously. The first edition, first impression published in the UK by Heinemann. Following the story of miniature mechanic contributor Keith Steward as he finds out he has become the trustee of his ten-year-old niece. A tale with much sense of adventure and friendship. Complete with unclipped dust wrapper. Nevil Shute Norway was also an aeronautical engineer as well as pilot. Published under pen name Nevil Shute to protect his engineering career from inferences by employers or fellow engineers. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only. Dust wrapper unclipped and excellent with minor shelf wear, minor chipping to head and tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Minor spotting to fore edge, not affecting pages that remain bright and clean. Near Fine
Synopsis
NEVIL SHUTE NORWAY was born on January 17, 1899 in Ealing, London. After attending the Dragon School and Shrewsbury School, he studied Engineering Science at Balliol College, Oxford. He worked as an aeronautical engineer and published his first novel, Marazan , in 1926. In 1931 he married Frances Mary Heaton and they went on to have two daughters. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve where he worked on developing secret weapons. After the war he continued to write and settled in Australia where he lived until his death on January 12, 1960. His most celebrated novels include Pied Piper (1942), No Highway (1948), A Town Like Alice (1950) and On the Beach (1957).
