About This Item

London England: William Heinemann Ltd. Hardback. First Edition. Trumpets Over the Sea. Slight shelf wear to edges of D/J. In July 1967 J. B. Preistley moved with his wife and his entire household into a rented house at Daytona Beach. Intriguied by the idea of his favourite orchestra's cultivated brass and percussion competing with Daytona's torrid honky-tonk, he had decided to record for posterity the second visit of the London Symphony to the Florida International Music Festival. During the month-long engagement he attended every concert given by the L.S.O., mixed with the musicians and their hosts, and took in the Daytona scene with customary acuity. There is much to treasure in this book, especially for those whose enjoyment of classical music does not wait upon the whim of a critic. Mr. Priestley's analyses of the ambiance and performance of each concert are completely candid, his anecdotes of the musicians themselves amusing and his assessment of the discomforts - and comforts - of Daytona altogether convincing. The book radiates his appreciation of the young and buoyant L.S.O. - chose collective talent and disciplined ability are, Mr. Priestely believes, unmatched in any of the arts in Britain, and whose verve is, we believe, matched only by Mr. Priestley's as a writer. Illustrated. 160 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . Very Good. Cloth. First Edition. 1968.
