Paris, Baudry, 1844.

8 parts in 4 volumes 8vo [199 x 123 mm]. Complete. Red half straight-grained morocco, flat spines decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, top edge gilt. Elegant early 20th century binding in imitation.

First edition "of an unrivalled masterpiece. One of the most widely read books in the entire world". (Dictionnaire des Oeuvres)

Vicaire, III, 359-361; Carteret, I, 235.

"Rare and highly sought-after. Extremely rare in beautiful contemporary condition, reaching very high prices." (Clouzot, p.98).

"The heroes of these adventures are four gentlemen, inseparable friends, musketeers of Louis XIII: Athos, in reality Count de la Fère, was ruined by a tragic marriage with an adventuress; he became a musketeer out of despair, he has a romantic, noble and haughty soul; Porthos, whose real name is du Vallon, is a debonair and conceited giant; Aramis, or the Knight of Herblay, torn from his religious calling by a gallant adventure, oscillates continuously between a vague mysticism, a Jesuitical skill in intrigues, secret and very aristocratic loves, and a fiery bravery. The first three companions are joined by d'Artagnan, a courageous and cunning Gascon, who arrives from his native province with the wildest ambitions and meagre savings; he will become the hero of the story."

The skillfulness with which this work is conducted is not found in any other of its kind.

Alongside the serial novel, which had just appeared with Eugène Sue's Mystères de Paris, Alexandre Dumas created a new genre by exploiting the public appeal of French history and by taking advantage of the publication of chronicles and memoirs undertaken in the wake of the vast movement that had created modern history in France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Dumas, the founder of this genre, was to remain its model.

"'Les trois Mousquetaires' appears as an unequalled masterpiece and remains one of the most read books in the whole world" (Dictionnaire des Œuvres).

Very rare and famous first edition preserved in its elegant uniform bindings in red half-morocco.

Provenance: ex libris Serrigny, probably from the library of General Bernard Serrigny (1870-1954), close to Pétain, and author of several works on war.

Français

Paris, Baudry, 1844.

Vicaire, III, 359-361 ; Carteret, I, 235.
