About This Item

First Edition.

219 p.; ill.; includes Notes (p. 207-19).

Red cloth hardcover with gilt lettering to spine shows some minor bumping and edgewear, with a few tiny spots to foredge, but is otherwise Near Fine, with illustrated (map) endpapers, clean, bright, and well-bound. Price-clipped dust jacket is in Very Good condition with some edge and shelfwear, but is housed in a removable protective sleeve to prevent further wear.

From the dust jacket:

On Tuesday morning, June 28, 1887, in the East End of London, Miriam Angel was found dead. Nitric acid had been poured down her throat. Israel Lipski, a twenty-two-year-old Polish immigrant Jew was charged with her murder. This is the story of Lipski's trial, conviction and the fight for reprieve.
Martin Friedland, a Professor of Law at the University of Toronto, has unearthed the original transcript of the trial, and uses it extensively to demonstrate the evidence relating to the murder and the manner in which it was set out before the jury.
The
dramatis personae with the exception of the police and law officers were all Jews belonging to the impoverished community of immigrants in London's East End. The evidence was conflicting, and though the lawyers on both sides performed their duties as conscientiously as they were able there were some unanswered questions about the death of Miriam Angel - not least the mystery of the locked door.
A tremendous cast of legal luminaries and journalists play their respective roles, including Mr. Justice James Fitzjames Stephen, Mr. Harry Bodkin Poland, Gerald Geoghegan, John McIntyre Q.C. and W.T. Stead. A fascinating and heroic part is played by John Hayward, an obscure London solicitor. There is a role also for Henry Matthews Q.C. a barrister who had become Home Secretary.
Lipski was convicted and sentenced to be hanged.
Professor Friedland's researches are especially fascinating for the light they throw on the community in which the murder took place; and for the public outcries and private agonisings that gathered pace as the day of execution approached.
It is rare to discover the transcript of a murder trial which involved such great issues and so many distinguished lawyers and politicians; rarer still to find one where the case is intriguing, important yet scarcely known.
In this absorbing narrative Professor Friedland has made a unique contribution to the knowledge and understanding of a Victorian drama.

Martin L. Friedland is Professor of Law at the University of Toronto and has recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He gained his Ph.D. at Cambridge and it was his work in England which led to his interest in the Lipski case. He lives in Toronto with his wife and three children and outside the law his interests are music, squash, gardening and travelling.
