About This Item

London: T. Werner Laurie, Ltd,, 1922. Signed limited issue First edition, signed limited issue, number 387 of 1,000 subscribers copies signed by the author and printed on handmade paper. The Trembling of the Veil was the second of Yeats's seven autobiographical works, and was described by Arthur Symons as "an absolute masterpiece: far & away the best thing [Yeats] has ever done" (Ross, p. 559). The following year, Yeats was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature. Yeats's memoirs were collected in 1935 as The Autobiography of William Butler Yeats and consisted of Reveries over Childhood and Youth (1914), The Trembling of the Veil (1922), his Nobel Prize lecture, "The Irish Dramatic Movement" (1923), The Bounty of Sweden (1925), Estrangement (1926), The Death of Synge (1928), and Dramatis Personae, 1896-1902 (1935). This copy is from the library of Virginia bibliophile and historian Christopher Clark Geest, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Octavo. Original japon-backed green boards, titles printed in brown to paper spine label, green endpapers, untrimmed. With dust jacket. Monochrome portrait frontispiece with captioned tissue guard. Bookplate of Christopher Clark Geest to front pastedown. A little toned, with light offsetting to endpapers and prelims, some foxing to frontispiece and tissue guard. A very good copy indeed, in the slightly soiled jacket, a little sunned and rubbed, with some chips to spine ends and tips. David A. Ross, Critical Companion to William Butler Yeats (2009); Wade 133.
