Jesse Stuart's first novel, published in 1940, made history in many ways, not least as the first appearance of Boliver Tussie, one of the unforgettable characters in American literature. Boliver and his adversary, Anse Bushman, move through a landscape that has since become familiar to countless readers as the world of Jesse Stuart.
Publisher's mauve cloth with yellow printing and decoration on upper cover; Heavy wove endpages decorated with a painting entitled "Sorghum Making"; Top edge stained green. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with minor fading of the cloth on the rear near the spine. The Dust Jacket is with price and is in a new clear protective Mylar sleeve and presents beautifully; minimal wear on the spine tips and a minor damp-stain on lower spine area of the rear panel. 8vo; 8.5 inches tall; 340 pages; Wood block Illustrations by Woodi Ishmael. Jesse Stuart is a regional writer of eastern Kentucky, he brings to his fiction, ancestral links with the region, personal familiarity with the local and its history and even a little ridicule for the indigenous citizens. He is known for his short stories, poetry, and novels as well as non-fiction autobiographical works set in central Appalachia.
