Dilly..., 1797. 8vo, pp. xxix [xxx blank, xxxi - xxxvi Contents], 440, xxviii, including half-title, folding table at p. 230, recently rebound in quarter calf, gilt rules across raised banks, morocco label, marbled boards; half-title and title-page very slightly soiled and foxed, edges dusty and slightly soiled. A native of Dumbarton, Colquhoun (1745 - 1820) was Lord Provost of Glasgow in 1782 and 1783, and he founded Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. In 1789, he moved to London and was appointed justice, and his early publications were concerned with the welfare of the poor. He made his reputation in 1795, when he published the above book, and it led to the founding of a more efficient and orderly police authority.
