Concord: Horatio Hill, 1832. Hardcover. vi, 234p., cloth spine over plain boards with paper spine label, corners bumped, front hinge cracked, front pastedown endpaper foxed, else very good condition. Bookplate and signature of Dr. Benjamin Cory on the front pastedown endpaper, dated Nov. 1851. Cory (1822-1896) was San Jose, California's first American-trained doctor. He was born in Ohio, where he practiced medicine for two years before heading west and arriving in California in 1847. He first settled in San Francisco, but decided there were too many doctors there already and soon moved in San Jose. He made two trips to the gold mines during the height of the Gold Rush, where he both dug for gold and practiced medicine. He was also a member of the first California Assembly and its first meetings were held in his office in San Jose, which was then the state capital. After the capital moved to Vallejo in 1851, he was elected to the San Jose Common Council, where he advocated for ordinances to increase the health, safety, and sanitation of the city. Along with his brother Jack, also a doctor, he co-founded the Santa Clara County Infirmary. He died of grippe in 1896 at the age of 76.
