About This Item
Auburn, N.Y.: David Rumsey, 1819.. [4],320pp. plus folding frontis. map, mostly lacking, and errata slip pasted to final blank. 16mo. Contemporary calf, rubbed, leather spine label. Text tanned, with occasional foxing, dampstaining to bottom outer corner of textblock. Slightly later ownership stamp to front free endpaper and titlepage. About half of the original map lacking, with a horizontal tear running the full length of the map, else good. One of the classic narratives of midwestern travel. "It is a work of sterling merit....The route of the author was down the Ohio, stopping at all the towns and places of interest on both sides of the river..." - Thomson. Thomas proclaims the merits of the Wabash Valley above all else. The map illustrates the Vincennes District. For some reason most copies of this book lack the map or have had it torn out. HOWES T162, "aa." SABIN 95384. CLARK II:236. BUCK 92. STREETER SALE 1409. GRAFF 4126. THOMSON 1139.
