First published in 1766, this is Smollett's account, in the form of letters to various friends, of his two-year sojourn on the Continent. Covering numerous subjects (the book's sub-heading was "Containing Observations on Character, Customs, Religion, Government, Police, Commerce, Arts and Antiqiuities. With a particular Description of the Town, Territory, and Climate of Nice"), the book entertains largely because Smollett's letters are full of "cantankerous vilification" and he has very little good to say about anything. As to be expected, his prejudiced account sold extremely well while being condemned by more tolerant travellers.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
