About This Item
Edinburgh: Printed for William Creech, 1806. First published in Glasgow in 1763. The two maps, well engraved and printed on thick paper, are: "A Map of Mr. Bell's Journeys from Petersburg to Ispahan and from Petersburg to Constantinople" (39.5x31 cm) and "A Map of Mr. Bell's Journey from Moscow to Pekin. Born in Antermony, Scotland, John Bell studied medicine in Glasgow and was nominated medical attendant to Artemy Petrovich Volynsky of the Persian Embassy in 1714 which first brought him to St. Petersberg. After a brief hiatus in China, he returned to St. Petersbergin 1738 for a mission in Constantinople where he married his wife Mary Peters of Russia. His travels, first published in Glasgow in 1738 were immediately translated into several languages and circulated throughout Europe.
