London: Ackermann and Co, 1843. Hardcover. Very good. x, [2], 520 p. 32 cm. 52 small in-text illustrations, presumably after Karl Bodmer. Large fold-out map at rear with route marked in colour. List of Illustrations and Plates refers to plate volume. Bound in leather with original spine overlaid. All edges gilt. Corner repairs and repairs to front endpaper. Tape repairs and some stains to map at rear. Extensive pencil notes to list of illustrations.
Prince Maximilian (1782-1867), whose celebrated military career ended with the Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, traveled to America in 1832, intending to study and report on the flora and fauna of the interior. Instead, he concentrated on describing the culture, language, customs, and appearance of the indigenous people he encountered along the way. Maximilian's work become well known for his thorough study of the Mandan tribe in particular. Of interest is his description of one of the most important ceremonies of the Mandans, the O-kee-pa, although he did not witness it himself. While his writings may be said to reinforce the Romantic ideal of the "noble savage," Wied's Travels also records the impact contact with fur traders and settlers had on native tribes and the land around them. He was accompanied by Karl Bodmer as expedition artist and Bodmer's colour illustrations form the plate volume that accompanied this book. Field 1036; Howes M443a; Sabin 47017; Wagner-Camp 76:3.

A few hair-line surface clefts and two larger clefts, one along the flag's edge and the other at flag center. Exceptionally rare and well-preserved Revolutionary War artifact depicting one of the most famous and enduring symbols and mottos of the colonial fight for independence.. Remarkable eighteenth-century engraved woodblock depicting an uncoiled rattlesnake against the thirteen-stripe flag emblazoned with the motto "Don't Tread on Me" set diagonally below. This original woodblock would have been used during the Revolutionary War to reproduce this defiant cartoon in colonial pamphlets, newspapers, and broadsides during the fight for independence. The cartoon's thirteen stripes represented the thirteen colonies, and the threatening serpent posed a striking warning to those who would dare tread upon their freedom. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
