London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans & Roberts, 1857-1858., 1857. First British printings. 8vos. Variously paginated. Illustrated. Bound in 3/4 calf with marbled papers over boards. Complete with 60 lithographed plates and 15 folding maps plus extensive woodcuts. The first 3 volumes were printed in 1857 and the last two in 1858. All are first editions bound uniformly as best the binder could, as the printer marbled the edges in 1857 but didn't in 1858, or publisher used a different printer which may explain tissue guards in volumes 4 and 5 and not in the first 3. Edges on volume 4 and 5 are plain. Small stain to corner of frontispiece in volume 2 not affecting the image. A tight, very good plus or better set.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Description:
London: John Murray, 1824. First Edition. Parry was of the opinion that the Northwest Passage could probably be reached through Hudson's Bay. In 1821, he set out to investigate that possibility and to link up with John Franklin's overland expedition to the Coppermine River, and down to Coronation Gulf. He sailed through Hudson and Frozen Straits, explored Repulse Bay and proceeded west and north to Lyon Inlet. He passed the winter at Winter Island and then resumed his northward voyage, discovering Fury and Hecla Strait. The second winter was spent at Igloolik Island off the northeast coast of the Melville Peninsula. This account of the voyage and explorations conducted contains much information regarding the characteristics and social life of the Esquimaux of the region. Most of the plates, after drawings by Captain Lyon, illustrate the domestic life of the Esquimaux, their fishing and hunting practices, dwellings and tools, &c. An Esquimaux vocabulary is also included. Arctic Bib. 13142.…

Samuel Purchas was born in Thaxted, England probably in 1577. His father, George, was a prosperous cloth merchant, but little is known of his mother, Anne. Little is known of his childhood, and in 1594, he entered the University of Cambridge. He graduated in 1597 and was later ordained a deacon in the Church of England. In 1604, he became the vicar of the village of Eastwood. While extremely busy in his work taking care of the spiritual needs of the people of Eastwood.Purchas managed to indulge in his love of reading. His favorite topic was exploration. The thought of brave Englishmen battling the stormy seas (and jealous Spaniards) in wave-tossed ships thrilled the patriotic Reverend Purchas, and he turned to writing to help spread the word and encourage other stalwart English adventurers to try their hand at exploring. In 1613, he penned… Read More

Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

During the years 1794-1802, he rounded South America to reach the Pacific coast, then visited the Pacific islands and the coasts of Asia and Australia. In the Moluccas, he sold the Ruby and purchased the Nautilus; correspondingly, the test is divided into two sections.
