Cincinnati: Henry Howe, 1856. Later printing. Leather bound. Fair. 832 p. 23 cm. Colour frontispiece, 5 folding colour plates, and 6 full page colour plates of which one is a second title page. Full leather, decorated and printed in gilt on the spine. Green patterned endpapers. Worn on all edges and spine. One signature coming loose in the middle, rear hinge cracked, but without weakening the binding. Light foxing, including some of the colour illustrations. Dampstain to corner of final pages. Ink inscription on verso of front free endpaper.

Accounts of travel throughout the world, condensed and abridged from a variety of sources, all named in Authorities following the Contents. Two chapters cover, 'Adventures and Explorations in the Polar Regions,' noting that no trace has yet been found of the lost Franklin expedition which, "perhaps will so remain forever shrouded in impenetrable mystery." Chapter on the slave trade as well as one on the ruined cities of Central America.
