Two volumes complete - Volume One - xi, [1], 303pp, [1] and Volume Two - viii, 296pp. Contemporary full calf, raised bands, spines in six panels, morocco title labels to second panel, volume number in gilt to fifth, old private library labels to third. Chipped with small amount of loss to spine ends, rubbed, rear joint of volume one is split, holding on cords, but weak. Internally some off-setting from plates, some marginal soiling, previous owners name to head of title, with armorial ink stamp to front pastedowns, but generally fairly bright and clean. With forty-one aquatint and colour plates (as called for), including two folding. First published in 1809. The American edition was issued without illustrations. "Between 1805-7 this British painter was commissioned by the Russian government to paint canvases for the new Admiralty in St. Petersburg... he is forced to leave the by Treaty of Tilsit." Contemporary signature on end paper and tiny printed bookplate of John M. Roberts. Octavo, 475p., full leather with attractive original spine with gilt trim and mounted red leather label. Good plus, leather rubbed, text slightly browned and occasionaly spotted throughout. Binding secure. Interesting text as seen by sharp eye of an artist. .

The author (1777-1842) went to Russia in 1804 at the Czar's invitation to depict Russian historical events. An affair with a Russian princess forced him to leave the country, but he later returned and married the lady. Stadler's colored aquatints after Porter's sketches of Russian, Finnish and Swedish costume and scenery are among the liveliest illustrations of the early nineteenth century.
