Synopsis

Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915-2011) was an intrepid traveler, a heroic soldier, and a writer with a unique prose style. After his stormy schooldays, followed by the walk across Europe to Constantinople that begins in A Time of Gifts (1977) and continues through Between the Woods and the Water (1986), he lived and traveled in the Balkans and the Greek Archipelago. His books Mani (1958) and Roumeli (1966) attest to his deep interest in languages and remote places. In the Second World War he joined the Irish Guards, became a liaison officer in Albania, and fought in Greece and Crete. He was awarded the DSO and OBE. He lived partly in Greece—in the house he designed with his wife, Joan, in an olive grove in the Mani—and partly in Worcestershire. He was knighted in 2004 for his services to literature and to British–Greek relations. Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a doctoral student in geography at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written for The Guardian , The Believer , The Nation , Foreign Policy , and The New York Review of Books , among other publications.

Terms of Sale

BOOKLOVERS PARADISE

30 day return guarantee, with full refund including original shipping costs for up to 30 days after delivery if an item arrives misdescribed or damaged. Please note we require a contact number and a physical address for delivery.
You will find the LOCATION of our Bookstore on Google. ALL our books are thoroughly cleaned. All books with dust jackets/ wraps are completely covered in 50 or 75 micron High Density PolyEthylene (= "plastic" = archival acetate film), as are books without dust jackets costing more than US$20. Soft-covers and hard-covers without Dj s are covered in adhesive plastic. While we have neither insects nor dampness in our shop, you might find that the total plastic cover keeps both at bay. Covering the whole book means that the common edge-wear described by so many dealers is mostly absent in our books. Any "plastic" is easily removable, it is not adhered to the book nor to the dust jacket. We do not use sellotape nor any other tape which discolours. We restore books where necessary and describe ONLY EXCEPTIONS to a perfect state. Faults in expensive books are described in huge detail. WHEN RESTORED the majority of "faults'' are visible only with great difficulty and certainly NOT in an image. To avoid misleading you we include few images. Please be guided by the very full descriptions. If no faults are described in a cheaper book, please be guided by the Condition. RESTORATION SERVICE. We restore any book younger than 1800 making your grotty, broken old books look like beautifully-cared-for precious old books. DUST JACKETS IN FACSIMILE. We provide colour copies of any DJ in our stock. Please ask for quotes, images & descriptions. We pride ourselves that THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL BOOKSH0P:- THE CROSSROADS OF CIVILIZATIONS PAST; REFUGE OF ALL THE ARTS AGAINST THE RAVAGES OF TIME; AN ARMOURY OF FEARLESS TRUTH AGAINST WHISPERING RUMOUR; INCESSANT TRIUMPH OF THE RIGHT-TO-KNOW.
