About This Item

London: John Sharpe, 1817. Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 4". Richard Westall. A nicely illustrated leather-bound copy of poetry by Oliver Goldsmith, with illustrated plates by Richard Westall. Scarce 1817 Edition. Illustrations include a title page engraving, five illustrated plates, and several in-text illustrations by Richard Westall (1765-1836), an English painter and illustrator, best known for his portraits of Lord Byron. This is a wonderful collection of poetry by Oliver Goldsmith, containing 'critical observations' about the poet and his work as well as some of his most well-loved poems. Contents include 'The Traveller', 'The Deserted Village', 'The Hermit', 'The Logicians Refuted', and 'Stanza on Women', ending with 'Epilogue: Intended for Mrs. Buckley'. Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, and poet. He is best known for his novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield', as well as his many pastoral poems. Many critics believe that he wrote the classic children's tale 'The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes'. Collated, complete.  Bound in a full calf binding. Externally, smart. Light wear to the extremities and the spine, particularly along the bands of joints. spine is lightly faded. A few marks to boards. Rear hinge is starting, with the spine beginning to come away from the binding. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to the text and a few spots to the margins to the first and last few pages of text. Very Good
