About This Item
New York, NY: Harper and Brothers, Publishers, 1957. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very good minus. 248pp. Octavo [22 cm] 1/4 black cloth with brown paper over boards. Map endpapers. Extremities moderately rubbed; spine lightly rolled. In a dust jacket, with rubbing and creasing to the edges, and sunning to the spine. When Cid Ricketts Sumner read a personal in the Saturday Review inviting recruits for an expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers, she answered it, reasoning: "Why not? Sixty-four is the right age for adventure- youth the time for caution, considering how much it has to lose."
So it was that she found herself one woman in a party of seven boatmen and photographers on a voyage by rubber raft along the course Major Powell had taken in 1869- the purpose of the Eggert-Hatch River Expedition being to record the ancient beauty of the canyon country before engineers moved in to dam and control its waters.
