About This Item
Los Angeles, CA: Army & Navy Publishing Co, 1942. Quarto. 80 pages. Contains the article by Captain William F. McCahill: "History of the United States Marine Corps "which was followed later with his work "First to Fight "with an inset picture of Major General A.A. Vandergriff. What makes the initial part of the history interesting is Captain McCahill traces what had happened in the Pacific to January 1, 1943. From the early days of Wake, Guam and the Philippines, he begins to show how the Marines began to repulse the Japanese [Japs in the parlance of the day]. The earliest shock was how the Japanese would not surrender so their losses were higher often losing at rate of 10-1 of the American forces. The contemporary view of the battle of Guadalcanal, Carlton's Raiders. He notes that now January 1, 1943, the strength of Marine Corps had risen from 65,000 to 200,000. The rest of the book which is primarily pictures of the training with insets of the various generals shows the replacement of the men who were trained at the 12th. Bound in an embossed red cloth lettered in gilt and blind, some fading to rear board, light wear to corners, small closed edge tear to lower margin of page 67. A Scarce work.
