A lovely first edition of this interesting book following four controversial trials, exploring the nature of crime and punishment, by Rebecca West. The first edition of this work.A fascinating exploration of four unconventional trials, exploring the nature of guilt and innocence, crime and punishment, forgiveness and retribution. Most of the book follows the Nuremberg trials with three essays titled 'Greenhouse with Cyclamens,' giving a precise, thorough, and thought provoking insight. The other essays follow two murder trials which were particularly brutal, one of a lynching in North Carolina, and the other of a torso murder is the UK. Most of the volume is based on articles published in the Daily Telegraph, Time and Tide, the New Yorker, the Evening Standard, and World Review. A fascinating volume following the pursuit of the truth.With the original, unclipped dustwrapper. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelfwear and slight bumping to the extremities as well as head and tail of the spine. The dustwrapper is unclipped and smart, with slight spotting to the wrappers, minor shelfwear and slight cupping to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
