About This Item

First book edition of the combined works, "Puddn'head Wilson" having appeared alone in 1894 in London, first state of the text, frontispiece with the facsimile signature being 1-7/16 inches. 432 pp. 4to. Roan cloth, extravagantly stamped in black and gilt on cover and spine; spine sunned; rubbing and wear to head and tail of spine, with additional small loss at head; minor bumping to corners; front endpapers loose but present; with previous owner's bookplate and gift inscription; photographic frontispiece with original tissue guard. With marginal illustrations. First book edition of the combined works, "Puddn'head Wilson" having appeared alone in 1894 in London, first state of the text, frontispiece with the facsimile signature being 1-7/16 inches. 432 pp. 4to. A slightly later printing - retaining the first edition's elaborately decorated boards - of Twain's classic novel of small town life, rasicm, and the nature of identity. The characters of Pudd'nhead Wilson were originally intended to be part of Those Extraordinary Twins, but Twain decided to separate them out and expand their story to give more weight to its tragic theme. The twins appear in the tale, though solely as mere mentions, and their own shorter, lighter, more comedic narrative was appended afterward. BAL 3442; McBride, p. 170; Johnson, Twain, pp. 59-61
