About This Item

Previous binder's stitch marks visible left margin. Otherwise, pages are very clean with a fox mark here or there. Book now protected in mylar. Nicholas Rowe is considered the first editor of Shakespeare and published the first 18th Century edition of Shakespeare in six volumes in 1709. "The Tragedy of Jane Shore" professedly an imitation of Shakespeare's style, was played at Drury Lane with Mrs. Oldfield in the title role in 1714. Running for nineteen nights, it kept the stage longer than any other of Rowe's works. Jane Shore is frequently mentioned in William Shakespeare's play, Richard III. Jane Shore was quite the figure in 15th Century English history. Jane was known as "The Rose of London" for her beauty. She was a mistress of King Edward IV among others and even spent some time in prison. This is a rare, not often seen, first edition.
