About This Item
London: Robert Jennings and WIlliam Chaplin, 1831. FIRST EDITION. Complete with 26 engraved plates (though some out of order as indicated on the "List of plates"), each with tissue guard, text block with gilt edges; rebound in modern green cloth, minor foxing on some of the plates, generally in the margins. Ownership Inscription of Selina Atherley on fly-leaf. First edition. Written in a romantic style, this work includes descriptions of buildings and places in Venice and Rome, together with stories and poetry relevant to the locations. As an example of the style of writing, the chapter on the Rialto begins: "A thousand grand remembrances and splendid visions of the past await us on the old Rialto. It was from the island of the Rialto that queenly Vencie first raised her yet undiademed head; and it is on the bridge of the Rialto that she seems to have laid aside her glory, and sits deserted among her palaces." The beautifully detailed engravings enhance the picturesque romanticism of the text.
This is the second of four volumes issued as The Landscape annual (issued for the years 1830-1833). The beautifully detailed engravings are made from drawings by the artist Samuel Prout (1783-1852), primarily of scenes in Venice and Rome.
