The scarce first edition of this work, with folding colour plate and numerous full plate illustrations protected by tissue guards.The work of Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton Gray, a Scottish historian and travel author. In 1840 she published this work, which served as a travelogue and an account of her archaeological research during a visit to Italy between 1837 and 1839. As a woman, Gray was attacked for conducting historical research by men who shared her profession.To the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of Stafford H. Northcote, a British Conservative politician who served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumped extremities and spine tail. Missing portion of back strip at spine head. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to first few pages, otherwise generally bright and clean. Good
