About This Item
J. Hassell, London., 1819. First edition. Octavo. pp viii, 147, [1], [iv] Index. Twenty-four hand-coloured aquatint plates drawn and probably engraved by Hassell. Fine 19th century binding of full tan calf with raised bands, floral gilt decorations to spine, gilt rules and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, two morocco title labels. Eighteen of the plates show views in which the canal features, often with locks or bridges. Hassell was taking advantage of both the widespread enthusiasm for this new means of transport and the beauty of the landscape surrounding this canal.Fine.
