TItle: Toronto, 100 Years of Grandeur, The Inside Stories of Toronto's Great Homes and The People Who Lived There. Author: Martyn, Lucy BoothPublisher: Pagurian Press Limited, Toronto, ON, 1978ISBN: 0-88932-071-3
This book traces the social history of Toronto from its days as York when the finest residential area was south of King Street, through the early years when leading its citizens displayed their wealth on Sherbourne, Jarvis and St. Georges streets, then moved to Rosedale. This study of the named houses of Toronto reveals colourful, sometimes surprising details, and helps the reader understand the living history of a great city. The high ceilinged houses of the nineteenth century, with their spacious rooms, handsome panelling, decorative plasterwork, and fine mantelpieces will never be built again, but fortunately enough have survived for us to appreciate Toronto's heritage.
