She was the youngest daughter of the author Sir Henry hider Haggard and his wife Louisa who enters the last few chapters of this book as little Marianna Margitson. Lilias Haggard was born and (lied in llitchingham House, the home of her Margitson forbears and the scene of many events described in these pages. She was widely travelled, and accompanied her father on many of his foreign expeditions. During the First World War Miss Haggard joined the Nursing Auxiliaries and in 1919 was awarded the M.B.E. for her services.
