Grey cloth with three green panels on spine w/gilt titles. Clean and unmarked, tight and solid; with slight wear to extremities; bottom front corner very gently bumped; slight depression of cloth to lower spine near heel. Top edge of page block stained green, has a black rem mk on it. Rough cut. Title page and verso with green tones illustrations in line sketches by Herbert Ryman that are a delight, capturing the times, the people, the fashions. Interior is quite clean and free of any markings, pages lightly and evenly toned.The story begins when the Battle of Waterloo was fought and ends when the 19th century is coming to its close. It is filled with the people and romance of a fast-changing civilization and of the building of a huge trade empire--ex-kings, princesses, millionaires, actresses, sailors, planters, portrait painters--and is centered in London, but takes the reader also to America, Jamaica, Bermuda. Historical fiction. Pages 467-930. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. Publisher: New York. Doubleday, 1955.
