Octavo, first edition, pp. xvi, 1 (chart), 279, purple cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and front, halftone illustration. Wedgwood, in the early 19th century, long before the invention of photography, discovered a way of creating images by placing flat objects and painted transparencies on top of paper sensitized with silver nitrate (Robert Hirsch, Seizing the Light, p. 8). However, these first photographs quickly deteriorated with exposure to light. Boni p. 274, Epstean Collection 545, Roosens/Salu 10963. Condition of this book: Very good with faded covers and spine, browned endpages. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
