About This Item

London: Macmillan & Co., 1872. Leather. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". Various. A presentation copy of this interesting work of fiction about university life in the nineteenth century, handsomely bound in full calf by Macmillan & Co. A signed copy, in a full calf binding by Macmillan & Co, with their binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper.  With the author's inscription 'Edward Praill, with the author's kindest regards, Feb 1874'. This is a New Edition of this work, with illustrations by Sydney P Hall. 'Tom Brown at Oxford' was first serialized for Macmillan's Magazine before being issued in book form in 1861. It follows the protagonist Tom Brown's journey to the fictional St Ambrose's College Oxford.  A vivid impression of university life during the mid nineteenth century. Thomas Hughes was an English lawyer, judge and author. His 'Tom Brown' books are semi-autobiographical, as the first novel 'Tom Brown's School Days' was set at Rugby, where the author attended. Uncommon for there to be a signed copy of this work. In full calf binding by Macmillan & Co, with their binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Externally, smart, with just some light rubbing to the joints and extremities. A small scuff to the front board. Author's signature to one of the front free-endpapers. Internally, front hinge is tender, remaining binding is firm. A few spots to the endpapers, otherwise pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good
