About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co, 1871. Leather. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A signed copy of the popular Victorian novel 'Tom Brown at Oxford'. In a full morocco binding. A signed copy, in a full morocco binding. With the author's inscription 'Sybil Irene Cutler with the best wishes of her Godfather the Author 1873'. This is a New Edition of this work, with illustrations by Sydney P Hall. 'Tom Brown at Oxford' was first serialized for Macmillan's Magazine before being issued in book form in 1861. It follows the protagonist Tom Brown's journey to the fictional St Ambrose's College Oxford. A vivid impression of university life during the mid nineteenth century. Thomas Hughes was an English lawyer, judge and author. His 'Tom Brown' books are semi-autobiographical, as the first novel 'Tom Brown's School Days' was set at Rugby, where the author attended. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, Macmillan and Co. Uncommon for there to be a signed copy of this work, especially with such a personal connection to Hughes. In a full morocco binding. Externally, rubbed to the joint sand extremities. Small loss to the head of spine. Author's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with juist the occasional light spots. Good
