Bright and clean red cloth binding, completely unmarked, lower corners and edges lightly rubbed; tight, solid and square with intact red and gold endbands. Internals quite clean and free from any markings, no creasing. A wealth of portraits, prints, drawings, photographs and documents give a vivid sense of the Russian world from which Tolstoy came, and the world he evoked so powerfully in his writings. Jacket with striking wrap-around artwork; it is quit clean, bright, unmarked with light to moderate wear to edges. Archival protective jacket cover. Crankshaw has written a detailed and sympathetic book on Russia's greatest writer, Count Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, and his life and the world in which lived and wrote. There are illustrations of Tolstoy's life in all its stages. He provides a fuller understanding of Tolstoy's genius and the limitation that went with it.
