Japan 002 Tolischus, Otto D. Tokyo Record. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943, 462 pages, index. Good copy of the first edition. Hardcover in black cloth lettered in gilt. No jacket. There is a rubber stamp on the front free endpaper from a lending library, Jay Vee Shop, Vallejo, California, Feb 24, 1943. Also, on the front lining paper is the bookplate of a collector from 1984. $10.00
Tolischus was a correspondent for the New York Times who was imprisoned in solitary confinement by the Japanese police; this book is a chronological record of events, personal experiences and impressions based on recollection of original data that had been confiscated. He had earlier won the 1940 Pulitzer Prize for Correspondence for his coverage of Berlin for the Times in the period 1933-1940. After being expelled from Germany by the Nazis, he was chose another assignment to Tokyo in January, 1941 but after Pearl Harbor was arrested and imprisoned until he was released in a prisoner exchange some six months later.
